ROLLER SHUTTERS

Arrow iconWhat are roller shutters?roller shutter door in industrial building

Roller shutters are closures where the door leaf rolls up above the doorway. The principle of rolling up is also used in all kinds of other variants such as roller shutters, shutter garage doors, roller shutters for shop windows, high-speed roller shutters and suchlike.

The roller shutters became popular in the 1970s and was primarily used as a replacement for the customary wooden sliding doors and revolving doors which had been used up until then.
It was the industrial door at that time. Roller shutters were mainly used as industrial doors for large doorways through which machinery and materials would be brought in and out. The door leaf consisted of single-walled steel slats. Because these slats had to roll up above the opening, it was important for them to be as thin and low as possible so that the roller shutters did not take up too much space when rolled up. As a result of the energy crisis at the end of the 1970s and the increasing demand for better insulated industrial doors during the 1980s, there was found to be a need for a new type of industrial door. Due to the need to use thin uninsulated slats, the roller shutters could not satisfy that requirement.

The main advantage when using a roller shutter is the very small space required for installation along with the fact that the door is relatively easy to install and does not require any complex installation constructions.

Arrow iconDisadvantages of roller shutters

Due to the thin slats, the insulation value of roller shutters is minimal. Besides that, a personnel entry door cannot be installed in the door leaf and it is not possible to fit any large vision panels in the roller shutters either. The paint applied to a roller shutter will be damaged more quickly by the rolling action.

Arrow iconCompact door as an alternative to the roller shutters

request a no obligation quotation compact door underneath crane gantryThe Compact door can be regarded as an excellent alternative. If it is necessary to replace an old roller shutter, the Compact door is theobvious choice.
Because the door leaf folds upwards, the Compact industrial door has the same space-saving characteristics as the roller shutter. However, the Compact door has a number of clear advantages compared to the roller shutters. The door leaf consists of sandwich panels four centimetres thick and therefore provides optimum insulation. The door panels fold together rather than roll up so no damage is caused to the paintwork. Large glass panels can be installed in this type of door in order to let in as much natural daylight as possible and it is also possible to install a personnel entry door in the door leaf.
